From the Mountains of Monte Joana to a Career in
Guiding:
A Passionate Journey ⛯
Since 2008, I have dedicated myself to guiding travellers
from all walks of life and corners of the globe, in five different languages,
through the rugged, breathtaking landscapes of Cape Verde. My passion for
guiding began in the heart of Santo Antão Island, in the small mountainside
village of Monte Joana, where I grew up with my grandparents. It was in these
very mountains that I first discovered my love for helping others. As a child,
I would often encounter lost tourists wandering through the winding paths,
unsure of their way. Even then, I felt a strong desire to guide them, to show
them the beauty and wonder of the island I called home.
At the age of seven, I was already fluent in English
and French, thanks to BBC shortwave audio courses that my grandparent would set
for me almost every day. That sparked my curiosity about the world. My thirst
for knowledge only would grew as I progressed through high school, spending
countless hours in the library exploring subjects like biology, chemistry,
geography, and literature. Biology, in particular, fascinated me_ it connected
me deeply with the natural world I had grown up in_ in the mountains of Santo Antão
island!
My academic journey took me to Sal Island, where I
completed high school. It was a time of personal exploration, as I balanced my
studies with two other passions: horses and the arts. I had four horses, and
they became a source of joy and freedom. I also painted and wrote poetry, which
allowed me to express the emotions stirred by the landscapes and people of Cape
Verde. Today, I still keep my atelier in Mindelo, the cultural capital of the
country, where I continue to paint and create whenever time allows.

Over the years, I have guided hundreds of travellers
from different nations, each with their unique backgrounds and perspectives.
This experience has taught me to embrace diversity, fostering a mindset that
transcends differences of race, gender, and belief. My approach to guiding has
always been rooted in professionalism and a genuine desire to ensure every traveller
walks away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Cape Verdean life.

Now, as the owner of my own incoming tour agency and
Destination Management Company (DMC) based in Mindelo, my work goes beyond
guiding—I offer curated experiences that delve into the essence of our islands.
Hiking through authentic nature trails, immersing in the local culture,
engaging in ecotourism, and uncovering the layers of history that have shaped
Cape Verde_ these are the pillars of my agency’s philosophy.
Every day, I wake up excited by the opportunity to
share this beautiful corner of the world with those eager to explore it. From
the soaring peaks of Santo Antão to the tranquil shores of São Vicente, I am
always motivated by the desire to create unforgettable experiences. My journey
as a guide is not just a profession but a calling_ a calling to showcase the
vibrant tapestry of Cape Verde, leaving each visitor with memories that will
